Congressman Proposes Bill Allowing Property Owners to Shoot Down Drones

In a bold legislative move, Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee has introduced the Defense Against Drones Act, aiming to permit individuals to use legally obtained shotguns to neutralize drones flying at or below 200 feet over their property. Burchett asserts that this measure is essential for safeguarding privacy and property rights.
The bill stipulates that individuals who shoot down a drone are required to report the incident to the Federal Aviation Administration within 60 days, provided the drone’s registration number is identifiable.
This proposal emerges amid increasing concerns over unauthorized drone activities. Notably, the Tennessee National Guard reported drone sightings over several installations last fall, prompting calls for enhanced security measures.
While the bill has yet to gain co-sponsors and faces opposition from law enforcement and drone operators, it underscores the ongoing debate over privacy, property rights, and the regulation of unmanned aerial vehicles in U.S. airspace.
